Långholmen kayak offers fishing kayaks in many different designs and price ranges. We have fishing kayaks both with and without a pedal system, for one or more people with a focus on fishing trips and/or recreational paddling. All our fishing kayaks are made of durable polyethylene plastic and have plenty of space for possible catch or packing. Fishing from a kayak is an easy way to get out on the water that more and more people have discovered. A fishing kayak is easier to handle than a boat - you can load it on the roof of the car, and you can get into really shallow bays that no other boats can access. You can also use it for things other than fishing, such as recreation (ordinary paddling), hunting, photography or bird watching. You are less visible than in a boat, and no engine scares away the fish. It also doesn't require the same maintenance as a boat and you don't need a berth.
What kind of fishing? In the archipelago, in lakes or rivers? Do you want to be able to paddle it like a "normal" kayak? How large distances do you need to be able to move? Will you need rudder?
A simple fishing kayak with low freeboards does not take as much wind as the larger models and you manage quite well with the paddle and usually do not need a rudder. You get around easily in shallow water and don't really have anything that can break if you happen to step on a rock. You also get close to the water, which gives a greater natural experience than if you are hidden behind high freeboards, like in a rowing boat. More expensive fishing kayaks usually have pedal drive and you get hands free, but need to be more careful in shallow water. Pedal kayaks for fishing are very agile and always have rudders. Then you don't have to parry with a paddle and can easily control the rudder with your hand.p>
What will it cost? A simple, cheap fishing kayak that you paddle by hand usually costs less than a pedal-powered one. Expect a price of 5,000 to 10,000 for a paddle kayak and 15,000 – 45,000 for a pedal powered one.
A cheaper fishing kayak without pedal drive or other finesse has at least one advantage: things that don't exist cost nothing, weigh nothing, don't break, take up no space and need no maintenance.
However, if it is important for you to be able to move around and at the same time handle the rod or net with both hands, it may be worth spending a little extra money on a model with pedals. For example our best fishing kayak Havspaddeln Viking.
The point of a pedal kayak for fishing is, of course, that you have both hands free for fishing. You can handle binoculars or a camera while moving on the water. On a longer trip, you also save energy, because you can switch between pedaling and paddling.
The disadvantages are that a fishing kayak with pedals is usually more expensive, heavier and not as basic.
Always have a paddle with you. Even if you choose a pedal-powered fishing kayak, it should also be able to be paddled by hand. This is for safety reasons, should the pedal drive break.

Can you reach what you need from the seat?
Having to stand up can be a risky moment depending on which fishing kayak you have as not everyone is suitable for it. As an example, Havspaddeln Lofoten is not suitable for standing in, while our pedal kayak Havspaddeln Viking is excellent for standing in as it is a very stable fishing kayak. If you want to be able to stand up, the kayak should be wide and stable, which can make the kayak a little heavier. It then becomes a little more difficult to get onto the roof of the car without help, but it can also be solved with the help of a boatroller. There are fishing kayaks from other brands that can weigh up to 50kg and then the convenience of having a fishing kayak instead of a boat almost ceases.
Does your kayak have stowage areas with watertight hatches? What type of rod holders are available? Are there drain holes that you can open and close if you get water in the cockpit?
Propeller unit/pedal system: Can you reverse with it, or just pedal forward? Can it be lifted out smoothly when you approach shallower water?
The attachments for the paddle ensure that it stays where it should and does not move around. Different people have different needs. If the fishing kayak has integrated mounting rails, it becomes more flexible and you will soon find your own solutions. Then you can place your extra rod holder, camera stand, GPS or sonar exactly where you want them and you don't have to drill directly into the hull.
Which fishing kayak fits best depends on the needs of the paddler. Are you going to go long distances on the open sea or fish by a lake? Should you bring extra packing in addition to your fishing equipment?
A fishing kayak with a pedal system is a very practical model if you have planned to fish while moving forward as you have your hands free and pedal with your feet. Such a model is usually also adapted to be able to stand up in. If you know that it will be taken with a lot of equipment and packing, it is better with a larger model with extra storage space. If the idea is instead to change areas often and manage the kayak yourself even on land, a smaller model may be more flexible. The vast majority of fishing kayaks are designed as sit-on-top models, i.e. without a cockpit and a wider open surface. You will be higher up from the water, which places you in a more comfortable position for the fishing itself, as well as giving you a natural overview of your surroundings. There are also cockpit models which are very useful if you want to be more protected from the water. For such a kayak, you can also have a canopy to really stay dry if it rains or blows up on the lake.
Both length and width distinguish kayaks from fishing kayaks, but primarily the fishing kayak has features that are more suitable for fishing. For example, the open design that gives you more mobility for fishing and that the kayak is equipped with a fishing rod holder. Some fishing kayaks have pedal systems or trolling motors, but the slightly cheaper models use a normal kayak paddle. Fishing kayaks provide better stability than a sea kayak due to their flat and wide hull.
A normal kayak is more suitable for longer trips due to its more speed-adapted hull, while the width of the fishing kayak makes it tougher to paddle long distances with.
The fishing kayaks are extremely sturdy and stable so they are almost impossible to capsize, but if that should happen it is much easier to get back out of the water compared to a sea kayak.
Most fishing kayaks can carry a total weight of 120-250 kg, including the weight of the kayak itself, fishing gear and the weight of the paddler. In order to maintain stability and safety on the water, it is important not to overload your fishing kayak and to distribute the weight evenly between the fore and aft of the kayak.
An inflatable fishing kayak is significantly more portable than a regular fishing kayak because it is pumped up and packed down easily after use. This makes it easier to transport the kayak in the trunk/back seat of a car or on the bus. Even storage becomes easier with an inflatable fishing kayak as it takes less plastic. A hard fishing kayak may be a little more unwieldy when it comes to storage and transport, but is instead more robust and durable. Both when it comes to rubbing against rocks and other things underwater, but also stress from fishing equipment that can be sharp.
