Canoe is a collective name

Canoeing is a collective name for various smaller narrow craft that are usually propelled forward by muscle power and paddle (also sails occur). A canoe is a tip-edged craft with both bow and stern, can be fully open or equipped with a deck with one or more cockpits. The term canoe originates from a Caribbean word, canoa, meaning boat.In the Swedish language, canoe is a collective name for the two main types of kayaks and Canadians. Canoes of different types have been found in virtually all places where man has lived. However, building methods and materials have varied according to the conditions and needs of different regions.

Canadians and kayaks

The canoes of the North American Indians are known in Sweden as canadians. They were originally dressed with fists or skins. Today they are built in veneer, aluminum or plastic. The kayak has Arctic origin, is always decked and equipped with one or two cockpits. They were originally built on a skeleton of driftwood or bone clad with skin or canvas. Modern kayaks are made of fiberglass or polyethylene. A special variant is the faltkajaken with a frame made of wood or aluminum upholstered with a rubber cloth or synthetic material and is collapsible. Canadians are paddled with single paddle, kayak with double paddle.

Five reasons why the Kayak is superior

In general, the canadian is best suited for calm lake waters and streams where winds do not get much leeway while the kayak is more suitable for more open waters where it can withstand wind and lake significantly better than the canadian.

  1. The kayak is safer

The hull shape is what really separates the different types.  And that determines the characteristics of the craft. The hull shape of a canoe is always the result of compromises. The requirements are often contradictory such as strength and maneuverability. The canadian is flat-bottomed. The kayak hull is usually a combination of V-shape and round shape. Stems and stern are V-shaped and the center part more or less round. The safest thing to do is to face the waves with your bow from the front. But even at the side lake, the kayak follows more easily with the wave movements and is therefore perceived as safer. In addition, the kayak has a deck combined with a cockpit opening that can be covered with a chapel that prevents water from penetrating. A wave can wash over the kayak without water penetrating. In addition, the kayak often has a kind of keel line; no real keel but an elevation that provides some course stability and to some extent prevents the kayak from hitting around as easily as a flat-bottomed vessel.

  1. The kayak is more comfortable

A kayak is ergonomically better created for the body than canadians. You sit more comfortably and can have direct contact via hips and seat with the kayak and then get a better balance and feel that you master the craft better. The kayak is simply more fun to paddle. You also sit better protected from the elements as you can cover the cockpit with a chapel.

  1. The kayak is more maneuverable

In a kayak you basically sit at the height of the water surface or actually often just below. It provides stability and comfort and allows your paddling movements to give a direct rash on course and speed. With double paddle, you can easily make corrections. The kayak's hull shape makes it easier to keep the right course without swaying back and forth in the direction of travel. In addition, the kayak is almost always equipped with a sled or rudder that makes it extra course stable and, if you have rudder, easier to also change course with.

  1. The kayak is better to pack

If you are going to bring packing, in the kayak there are usually both fore and aft spaces with tightly sealed waterproof covers. The gasket is well protected from the elements and is stable when the kayak moves. The centre of gravity will be low and stability will be better. The cockpit can also receive some cargo that needs to be easily accessible while travelling. The cockpit is easily covered. The kayak's deck can also be used. Here you can attach a map and compass and drinking water bottle can be squeezed under the deck lines.

  1. The kayak is faster

The kayak as a vessel is generally easier to handle. The hull shape in combination with the double paddle makes it significantly faster. In the kayak you can hold better with your legs and feet and thus get more power in the paddles. If you don't paddle double kayaking, you also paddle alone and can determine pace and speed yourself without having to adapt to a fellow paddler.
