Inflatable kayak – tips before you buy
Paddling an inflatable kayak is a wonderful way to experience nature up close. Light and compact, it makes spontaneous adventures easy – whether you live in a city apartment in Stockholm or out in the countryside. Here is why more and more people choose an inflatable kayak, and what to consider before you buy.
Kayaks have existed for thousands of years and come in many designs today. One type that has become hugely popular thanks to being portable, versatile and durable is the inflatable kayak. The first ones were made of rubber; today they use more advanced materials such as PVC and synthetic rubber (Hypalon), often with drop-stitch construction.
Why choose an inflatable kayak?
Easy transport
Forget roof racks and trailers. An inflatable kayak packs easily in the car – or comes with you on the train or bus.
Minimal storage
Deflated, it folds into a bag. Perfect if you have no garage or large storage room.
Versatile
Inflatable kayaks work on lakes, calm rivers and in the archipelago – depending on the model.
Benefits of inflatable kayaks
Low weight
Most inflatables weigh much less than hard-shell kayaks and are easy to carry to the water.
Good stability
Modern inflatable kayaks often use drop-stitch technology for a stiff, steady build, so you can paddle safely and comfortably even in slightly more demanding water.
Good value
They are often cheaper than hard-shell kayaks, making it easier to get started.

Tips for choosing an inflatable kayak
Size and capacity
How many will paddle, and how much gear will you bring? Models differ in size and maximum load. With a two-seater, make sure the seats can be moved so you can also paddle it alone.
- One person: Havspaddeln Frej or the faster sea kayak Havspaddeln Balder.
- Two people: Havspaddeln Loke.
- Family and luggage: Havspaddeln Saga inflatable canoe.
- Fishing: Havspaddeln Vidar.
Where will you paddle?
Calm water, archipelago or longer distances? Wider kayaks are more stable; narrower, longer ones glide better. Some are built for one purpose, others – like Loke and Frej – are all-rounders.
Material and quality
Check for durable PVC and reinforcements in exposed areas. It extends the kayak’s life and reduces the risk of punctures. A quality inflatable copes with rocky shores and lasts for years.
Accessories
Many inflatables come as a package with pump, paddle and bag – check what is included on the product page. Useful extras are an electric pump, a repair kit and a life jacket.
Care and maintenance
- Rinse and dry: rinse with fresh water after use (especially after salt water) and let it dry completely before folding.
- Store cool and dry: avoid long periods in direct sunlight – UV wears the material.
- Check the pressure: follow the manufacturer’s instructions; too much pressure strains seams and material.
