When you start paddling, it can feel good to stand on your knees as you get better balance the lower the center of gravity you have on the board. After a while it usually works well to stand up with your feet wide apart. When you paddle forward, you can take several paddle strokes on each side before you need to transfer the paddle to the other side of the board. If the paddle is pulled back in line with the board, it is almost possible to paddle straight ahead by only paddling on one side. When paddling, you should think about activating the entire upper body to get as much speed as possible.
As with other water sports, it is important to be aware of your surroundings when SUP paddling. In part, it is important to pay attention to others with whom you share the water, for example boats and kayaks. If it's very windy, it's good to stay close to land, and a good rule of thumb is to always paddle with someone else.
